AIFF Faces Dilemma Over FIFA ASEAN Cup Participation
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is currently in a tough spot regarding India’s participation in the first-ever FIFA ASEAN Cup. The issue arises as the tournament’s final is set for October 3, which clashes with a planned high-profile friendly match against Brazil in Kolkata on the same day.
An AIFF official mentioned, “We’re waiting for a response from FIFA,” indicating the uncertainty surrounding the situation.
India has been placed in Group A of the Premier Division, along with Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The ASEAN Cup will take place in Indonesia from September 24 to October 3, where India’s journey includes three group-stage matches, leading up to the final.
At a meeting on August 6, the AIFF’s executive committee decided to take part in both the ASEAN Cup and the friendly against Brazil, proposing to have different teams for each event. This decision faced criticism from football legend Bhaichung Bhutia, who argued that India should send its strongest squad to the ASEAN Cup.
According to FIFA rules, participating countries cannot send an Under-23 or second-string team to FIFA-sanctioned tournaments. This means India cannot field a reserve squad in the ASEAN Cup while the senior team plays Brazil.
The AIFF recognizes the Brazil match, scheduled during the FIFA International Match Window, as a valuable opportunity for Indian players to gain experience against a top footballing nation. The federation has also indicated it would formally inform FIFA about its plan to use different teams for the two events.
Now, the AIFF eagerly awaits FIFA’s answer on whether it can proceed with this arrangement. Meanwhile, the federation is keen on keeping the Brazil fixture while looking for additional international friendly matches to enhance the national team’s gameplay experience.
If India decides to withdraw from the ASEAN Cup, it may face regulatory actions, including potential financial penalties. This scheduling conflict may also affect plans for friendlies against New Zealand in November, which might coincide with the SAFF Championship.
For now, the AIFF is striving to resolve the October clash and finalize India’s international schedule, aiming for maximum exposure for the senior team.
