Summer evenings are best spent outdoors, especially with a delightful family-friendly puppet show in one of Alameda’s beautiful parks. This week, the String & Shadow Puppet Theater from Olympia, Washington, will present its annual summer production. This year’s performance is called “Night at the Grand Opera,” which promises to be fun and whimsical, leaning more towards the humorous style of the Marx Brothers than the classic opera vibes of Mozart. The show features quirky storylines, including love triangles and clever visual changes throughout the performance.
Founded in 2020 by Emily McHugh and Donald Palardy, the troupe started as a way to bring joy during the pandemic by offering drive-in puppet shows. They see art as a way to uplift the community, which is why all their performances are free. Catch the show this Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Jean Sweeney Open Space Park, 1925 Sherman St., Alameda, as part of the Rhythmix Cultural Works’ concert series.
Celebrating India’s Independence Day
Join in the festivities as the Association of Indo Americans and Bolly 92.3 FM host a vibrant India Independence Day parade in downtown San Jose this Saturday. This grand event will feature Bollywood star Taapsee Pannu as the grand marshal. The celebration marks both India’s 80th Independence Day and America’s 250th anniversary.
Starting at 4 p.m. in Plaza de César Chávez, the parade includes colorful floats and marching groups. The day kicks off at 2 p.m. with live performances, a food festival, a fashion show, and fun activities for kids, all wrapping up around 10 p.m. While admission is free, guests can register in advance at aiaevents.org to secure their spots.
A Free Summer Classic
Curtain Theatre, known for its outdoor Shakespeare productions in Marin, is under new leadership this year and is ready to entertain. This weekend, the group will present “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” filled with disguises, humorous misunderstandings, and a twist ending. The show will feature live acoustic music and playful puppetry, all set among the beautiful redwoods.
Performances are free and will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays until September 5 in the Old Mill Park Amphitheater. Bring a picnic and enjoy an afternoon of culture in nature!
Catch ‘Urinetown’ in San Francisco
Ray of Light Theatre is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a stellar production of the Tony Award-winning musical “Urinetown,” now running through August 29. The Merola Grand Finale is a must-see event this Saturday at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco.
