Liverpool has bolstered its defense by signing Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona. The 27-year-old defender from Uruguay adds versatility to manager Arne Slot’s lineup, capable of playing both center-back and right-back.
Araujo, who has made 213 appearances for Barcelona, scored 14 goals and provided seven assists during his time there. He also has 27 caps for the Uruguayan national team, netting one goal.
Liverpool’s official statement read, “We have agreed to sign Ronald Araujo on loan from FC Barcelona for the 2026-27 season, pending a successful work permit and international clearance.”
Since joining Barcelona in 2018, Araujo has won three La Liga titles, with the most recent one coming last season. Earlier this year, he even captained the team.
### Araujo’s Thoughts on the Move
Araujo expressed his enthusiasm about joining Liverpool, stating that this transition is perfect for him at this point in his career.
“I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy,” he said. “Joining this massive club with so much history excites me. I look forward to meeting my teammates and getting into action. I’m very motivated and ready to go.”
He also noted, “When I heard Liverpool was interested, things moved quickly. I believe this is the right step for me at this time.”
Araujo will don the No. 33 jersey for the team. His arrival adds crucial depth to Liverpool’s defense, especially as they deal with the long-term injuries of Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni.
The loan agreement includes a reported option for Liverpool to make Araujo’s stay permanent for about £47 million, though this option is not mandatory.
Araujo is Liverpool’s third signing of the summer, following Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz.
