Afghanistan Secures World Cup Spot with Thrilling Win Over Ireland

Afghanistan triumphed over Ireland by three wickets in a nail-biting ODI match held in Belfast on Monday, clinching a direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Chasing a target of 207 runs, Afghanistan began strong, reaching 97 for two. However, a fierce comeback from Ireland saw them crumble to 154 for six and then 176 for seven. Gavin Hoey was instrumental in this effort, taking four wickets and putting Afghanistan under pressure.

Despite the tense situation, Rashid Khan remained calm and finished with a solid score of 37 runs off 43 balls, including four boundaries. With the help of Yamin Ahmadzai, who scored four runs off 26 balls, Rashid guided Afghanistan to the final total of 207 for seven in 44.5 overs.

Knowing that a victory would secure their place in the next World Cup, Afghanistan’s win marked a significant achievement, as this was part of a five-match series where they now lead 2-0 following an earlier 92-run victory in the second ODI.

Rashid also impressed with the ball earlier in the match, taking three wickets for 44 runs and contributing to the pressure against the Irish batsmen. A.M. Ghazanfar joined him with another three wickets, collectively taking care of half of Ireland’s wickets.

Ireland, struggling at 128 for eight, saw a remarkable ninth-wicket partnership between Gavin Hoey and Jai Moondra. They added 76 runs, which is a record for Ireland in ODIs for that wicket. Hoey scored 36, while Moondra contributed 31 in just his second ODI match, showing great skill against Afghanistan’s spinners.

The partnership ended when Moondra was caught behind, and Hoey was dismissed shortly after while attempting a big shot.

In response, Afghanistan started their chase positively, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz looking strong and reaching his eighth ODI half-century. However, Hoey’s exceptional bowling spell turned the tide, as he took critical wickets, including that of Sediqullah Atal and Hashmatullah Shahidi.

With Afghanistan at seven wickets down and still needing 31 runs, Ireland saw a chance to pull off an upset. Yet, Rashid kept his composure, gradually bringing the chase closer. As Afghanistan needed just 15 to win, Rashid found his rhythm and finished the game with two runs off Harry Tector.

This victory solidifies Afghanistan’s record of playing in their fourth consecutive ODI World Cup, with direct qualification for the 2027 tournament now secured.
