Study Reveals Health Choices Can Extend Dementia-Free Years
Recent research from NYU Langone Health highlights that middle-aged adults who manage to avoid conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking can enjoy nearly 13 extra years of life without dementia. This important study was published in Neurology Open Access and examined how cardiovascular health in midlife can influence brain health later in life.
The research found that by addressing these three common health risks between the ages of 48 and 68, individuals could significantly delay mental decline. Dr. Josef Coresh, the senior researcher and director of the Optimal Aging Institute at NYU Langone, emphasized that taking proactive steps to reduce these risks is crucial for maintaining brain health well into old age. He noted that about 42% of Americans are expected to develop dementia after age 55.
The study analyzed data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, which has been ongoing since 1986 and included over 12,000 participants who were initially dementia-free. Researchers tracked the health of these individuals over an average of 26 years, focusing on their smoking habits, blood pressure, and diabetes status.
By the end of the observation period, 3,008 participants had been diagnosed with dementia, while 5,238 lived without cognitive issues. Those who did not have any of the three risk factors experienced, on average, 30 years free from dementia, while those with all three risk factors had only 17 years.
The study also revealed demographic patterns related to sex and race. Women experienced longer periods of cognitive health than men, averaging 18.1 years without dementia in the face of all three risk factors, compared to 16.6 years for men. Among participants with these risks, white individuals had an average of 19.6 dementia-free years, while Black participants averaged 16.0 years.
Dr. Coresh stressed the importance of targeted prevention efforts, especially for groups like Black adults. He hopes the findings will encourage individuals to prioritize their cardiovascular health as they enter their late 40s.
While these results are promising, the researchers noted limitations, such as the observational nature of the study, which means direct cause-and-effect relationships cannot be firmly established. Additionally, health assessments were based on single visits, and some lifestyle changes during midlife may not have been captured in the data.
