Protests Erupt in Jharkhand Over Job Recruitment Issues
On Monday, thousands of frustrated young job-seekers clashed with police in Jharkhand, one of India’s poorest states. The protests, which have been ongoing for weeks, are centered around allegations of unfairness in government job recruitment processes.
The situation intensified when demonstrators aimed to march towards the state assembly in Ranchi. Police responded by using water cannons, teargas, and batons in an effort to control the crowd, which included many who were waving flags and cheering despite the chaos.
This unrest follows closely after a separate youth-led movement known as the “Cockroach Movement,” which began as an online joke but grew into a significant protest against leaks in a national medical examination. This earlier movement placed significant pressure on the ruling BJP government, resulting in the resignation of the education minister.
Reports indicate that both the protesters and police suffered injuries during the Jharkhand clashes, but no official numbers have been confirmed. One protester, Piyush Kumar Soni, expressed his discontent with the police’s actions: “The baton charge was barbaric. We were protesting peacefully, but the government used violence against us.”
The demonstrators are calling for an independent investigation by the CBI, India’s leading investigative agency, to address their concerns about alleged misconduct in recruitment exams. They claim that irregularities, such as test paper leaks and cheating, have robbed young people of their chance at fair employment.
Jharkhand has a high rate of unemployment, making government jobs particularly competitive. Many young individuals invest years preparing for these exams, with a recent recruitment drive attracting nearly 640,000 applicants for just 2,025 positions.
In light of the protests, the state’s government—led by a regional party in alliance with the opposition Congress—has attempted to ease tensions through dialogue. Officials assert that they are willing to negotiate and have accepted many of the protesters’ demands.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the use of force against peaceful protesters, stating, “Students have a right to protest, and only dialogue can bring about solutions.”
The situation has already led to significant fallout, including the arrest of the former chair of the Jharkhand public service commission over alleged exam irregularities and the resignation of three commission members.
These protests highlight the growing frustration among India’s young population regarding corruption in public exams and a lack of quality job opportunities. With nearly two-thirds of the population under 35, the stakes are high for a generation eager for change.
While official data claims that unemployment fell to 9.9% last year, a study from Azim Premji University pointed out that nearly 40% of graduates aged 15 to 25 remain jobless.
