Kaif Supports Sarfaraz Khan for Test Spot Against Sri Lanka
Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has expressed his belief that Sarfaraz Khan should be chosen over Dhruv Jurel for India’s playing XI in the upcoming Test match against Sri Lanka. Kaif feels that Sarfaraz’s skills against spin bowling make him a better fit for the conditions in Galle.
Sarfaraz has been added to the squad as a replacement for the injured Sai Sudharsan, giving him another chance to break into India’s Test lineup. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif acknowledged that while the team might stick with Jurel due to his previous experience with the squad, Sarfaraz would be his top choice.
“If selectors look to support players who have been part of the team, they might decide to go with Jurel, even if his performance hasn’t been consistent. But for me, Sarfaraz’s talent makes him the best option,” Kaif stated.
Since his Test debut in 2024, Sarfaraz has played six matches, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.10. His impressive record includes a century and three half-centuries, highlighted by a memorable 150-run innings against New Zealand.
Sarfaraz’s Spin Mastery
Kaif emphasized that Sarfaraz’s wide array of shots could prove crucial as the match tightens over the days. “As the Test goes on, batting becomes tougher, and that’s where someone like Sarfaraz shines,” he explained. “He effectively uses sweeps and reverse sweeps, can hit over extra cover, and plays well off the back foot.”
Concerns About Jurel’s Form
Kaif also noted Jurel’s current form as a factor in his recommendation for Sarfaraz. The wicketkeeper-batter managed just 18 runs in two innings during India’s warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. “While India has shown strength, Jurel’s recent performances haven’t been up to mark,” Kaif said.
Jurel has tallied 478 runs in 10 Tests at an average of 34.14, including one century and one fifty, making the selection process more difficult, especially with Sarfaraz returning to the squad.
India’s two-Test series against Sri Lanka starts on August 15, with the No. 6 batting position being one of the most critical decisions before the first match.
