Zelenskyy Condemns Russian Drone Attack on Ukrainian Civilian

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed outrage over a recent incident involving a Russian drone that targeted a Ukrainian street vendor. The attack occurred on August 4 in Kherson, Southern Ukraine, where a video showed the drone tracking and eventually exploding near the vendor.

In a post on social media, Zelenskyy described the drone’s actions as “madness.” The footage, released by the Kherson Regional Military Administration, depicts a drone hovering near a minibus and following 52-year-old vendor Yuriy before detonating. Thankfully, Yuriy survived but was wounded in the blast.

Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating, “A Russian drone deliberately hunted down a man selling vegetables.” He emphasized that such acts reflect a broader pattern of Russian aggression, which he referred to as “human safaris.” The Ukrainian leader called for global awareness of these crimes, asserting that Russia’s actions threaten not just Ukraine but the entire region.

Yuriy, who spoke from a hospital bed, recounted how he and his wife were setting up their stall when he heard the drone. His wife fled for safety, while he tried to show he had no weapon by displaying vegetables. He described the drone even dodging under an umbrella as he ran for cover.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha labeled the attack a “barbaric war crime,” urging international intervention. Zelenskyy reinforced this sentiment, stating the importance of unity among nations to confront this threat and ensure lasting peace.

Authorities in Ukraine have opened over 5,300 cases related to drone attacks on civilians in the Kherson region, which have resulted in 287 civilian deaths and over 2,500 injuries, including many children. This systematic campaign appears aimed at civilians in everyday situations, including public spaces and homes.

As the horrific video circulated, it evoked memories of previous drone strikes, including a tragic incident where a one-year-old boy was killed while playing in his grandmother’s backyard.

Zelenskyy advocates for greater cooperation among nations to halt such violence, emphasizing the need for security guarantees to protect human life and maintain peace in the region.
