Public sector banks and regional rural banks will operate as usual today. This decision comes as the government aims to ensure that banking services remain uninterrupted ahead of a planned three-day nationwide strike starting on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Finance announced this decision in light of the strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), just after the weekend holidays.
### Why Are Banks Open on Sunday?
The Reserve Bank of India has given the green light for all bank branches, ATM-linked branches, and currency chests to remain open today. The Ministry of Finance stated that these facilities will be fully functional.
This decision is designed to provide customers with an extra day of access to banking services before the upcoming strike, ensuring that there are no service interruptions for several consecutive days.
“The welfare and convenience of bank customers is our top priority,” said a government spokesperson, urging the bank unions to reconsider their plans to strike.
Both the government and bank managements met with the unions on Tuesday, asking them to address the remaining issues through discussion and to ensure that essential banking services continue smoothly.
### A Strike at Month-End
The proposed strike is particularly significant because it falls right at the end of the month, coinciding with banks’ half-yearly closing on September 30. Disruptions during this time could create challenges for essential processes like reconciliation, provisioning, and other market-related activities.
By keeping the banks open today, authorities aim to offer customers an additional day of service while trying to minimize the potential disruptions caused by the planned strike.
### Why Are Bank Employees Planning a Strike?
The intended strike from September 28 to 30 follows a one-day protest held on September 11. Bank unions have been advocating for a five-day banking week and the removal of the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
Fortunately, the government has already decided to put the PLI scheme on hold after discussions with the unions. However, the request for a five-day workweek is still under review.
