Pakistan Secures Away Test Victory After Three-Year Wait
Pakistan’s cricket team celebrated a much-needed win as they defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain on Wednesday. This victory marks an important turnaround for the team, drawing the two-match series 1-1. The win is especially sweet for Pakistan, who had suffered eight consecutive away Test losses before this game.
Babar Azam’s team last triumphed in an away Test back in July 2023 against Sri Lanka, but a long struggle followed with the team failing to secure any wins during Shan Masood’s captaincy. With Babar reinstated as captain, hopes were high for the West Indies tour.
A Strong Foundation and Bowling Efforts Lead to Success
The foundation of Pakistan’s victory was laid by Abdullah Shafique, who scored a brilliant 160 runs in the first innings, leading the team to a total of 387. Babar also played well, contributing 88 runs. Notably, Shafique’s score makes him the first player from Pakistan to score 150 or more runs in a Test match in the West Indies since 1977.
With a first-innings lead of 43 runs, Pakistan’s bowlers stepped up, with Sajid Khan taking four wickets while Ali Usman added two more, dismissing the West Indies for just 117 runs in their second innings. This left Pakistan with a modest target of 75 runs to secure the win.
Pakistan chased down the target with ease, achieving 77 runs for the loss of only two wickets in 23.3 overs. Babar finished the match not out on 24, joined by Shafique, who also ended the game on 24 runs, giving Pakistan a comfortable victory.
A Boost Before Facing England
This win not only leveled the series but also provides a significant boost in confidence as Pakistan prepares for a challenging series against England later this month. After several difficult matches, Babar’s return as captain seems to have revitalized the squad, even though they still sit at the bottom of the World Test Championship standings.
Ending their away losing streak is a promising sign for the team, emphasizing the need for experienced players. Shafique’s remarkable innings, along with Babar’s steady batting and solid bowling, contributed to what is now one of Pakistan’s most significant Test wins overseas in recent years.
