Attack on Shakib Al Hasan’s Home Amid Political Turmoil
On Wednesday evening, an attack was reported at the home of former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan in Magura. Unidentified individuals allegedly threw bricks and stones at his house, causing damage to the property. This incident adds to the ongoing political unrest in the country.
The attack took place around 8:45 PM local time in the Keshab Mor area of Magura. Local police have stated that they have not yet identified the attackers. Magura Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Abdullah Al Mamun, confirmed that several windows were broken, but fortunately, no one was hurt. Police arrived quickly at the scene after the report was made.
Initial investigations revealed that petrol may have been poured on the house’s iron gate before it was set on fire. However, authorities found no evidence of a petrol bomb being used. An investigation is currently underway, but no arrests have been reported yet.
Shakib’s Political Connections
Shakib Al Hasan is well-known as one of Bangladesh’s top cricketers, but he also has political ties that make him a controversial figure. He was elected as a Member of Parliament representing the Magura-1 constituency in the 2024 general elections as a candidate from the Awami League. This election has been criticized by opposition parties for its lack of genuine competition.
The Awami League has been banned from political activities in Bangladesh since a major political shift in August 2024, which saw former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina lose her position. Recently, Hasina held a press conference from exile, calling for the ban on her party to be lifted and expressing her desire to return to Bangladesh despite facing legal challenges.
Shakib was present at the press conference, further emphasizing his connection to the former ruling party during this time of political tension.
Shakib’s Ongoing Absence
Since the fall of the Hasina government, Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh. He faces multiple legal issues, including being named in a murder case alongside others. Despite expressing a desire to return and face the legal proceedings, he has stated he would only do so if he can be assured of his safety and protection from harassment.
While currently based in the United States with his family, Shakib continues to participate in international cricket, playing in various T20 leagues around the world. Earlier this year, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) suggested the possibility of his return to the national team.
Shakib’s last match for Bangladesh was during the 2024 tour of India. In the meantime, he has been involved in several T20 tournaments, including the Caribbean Premier League and the Lanka Premier League.
