Highland Europe Raises $1.25B to Fuel Next-Gen Growth in European Startups

Highland Europe has successfully closed its sixth investment fund, raising an impressive $1.25 billion. This achievement follows several significant exits, including the sale of Nexthink for $3 billion to Vista Equity Partners, the acquisition of Huel by Danone for approximately €1 billion, and Bending Spoons making its market debut on Nasdaq with a valuation exceeding $18 billion.

Headquartered in London and Geneva, Highland Europe has raised a total of $4.3 billion since its inception in 2012. The firm has invested in over 80 companies and has seen 30 successful exits. Unlike many venture capital firms that focus on potential earnings, Highland Europe has transformed three of its major investments into over $1.1 billion in cash in just one year, which significantly contributed to the closing of this new fund.

In the last decade, Highland has supported companies that collectively generate more than $6 billion in revenue and employ over 15,000 individuals. Their investment strategy emphasizes backing firms in their growth phase, similar to their approach with successful investments like Nexthink and Huel.

Sam Brooks, a partner at Highland Europe, expressed gratitude towards their Limited Partners for their ongoing support. He highlighted that this backing allows the firm to continue empowering ambitious founders in a time when advancements in AI are transforming various industries.

In conjunction with the fund’s closing, two internal promotions were announced. Helena Richardson, with a focus on consumer companies, and Jacob Bernstein, dedicated to enterprise firms, have both been promoted to partner status. Brooks remarked that the promotions reflect their contributions to building the firm over the past decade.

Highland operates as an equal partnership rather than a traditional hierarchy, which helps maintain stability within its senior investor team. Recent investments reflect their strategic focus, including significant funding rounds for companies like Wordsmith, Unframe, and Ecorobotix.

The success in closing this $1.25 billion fund is noteworthy, especially considering that Highland Europe generated approximately the same amount from exits within a year. This financial maneuvering underscores the firm’s strategy of reinvesting proven returns rather than relying entirely on new investor funds.

As Highland continues its commitment to supporting European entrepreneurs, it will be intriguing to see if the firm changes its approach based on whether more portfolio companies choose to list in the US market, following current trends.
