MakuluLinux Transforms into AI-OS: A Unique AI-Driven Linux Desktop
The well-known MakuluLinux LinDoz distribution has undergone a significant transformation, launching as AI-OS, which its creator describes as an intelligent Linux desktop unlike any other.
On July 29, Jacque Montague Raymer, the developer behind MakuluLinux, introduced this innovative AI-OS. Built on a flexible Cinnamon desktop and a variant base from Linux Mint Debian (LMDE), this new operating system incorporates an integrated artificial intelligence (AI) environment. Users can easily interact with it by typing simple commands into a floating widget on their desktop.
Raymer’s journey with Linux began when he first launched MakuluLinux in 2020. After testing multiple beta versions over the past month, I found the AI features impressive enough to replace my usual Ubuntu and Linux Mint systems on my laptops. I’m also using AI-OS as a virtual machine on my desktop.
Three years ago, Raymer began exploring his Electra AI Center concept, initially offering it in LinDoz and other now-defunct distributions. He envisions a “Jarvis-like” experience, where users can converse with an AI interface to perform a variety of tasks—everything from running commands to generating text, images, and more.
What Sets AI-OS Apart
Unlike other operating systems that simply add AI functionalities, AI-OS is built from the ground up. Raymer explains that many developers merely attach AI providers to their systems without truly integrating them. “That’s not true integration,” he argues, emphasizing how his team wrote custom code and optimized the entire system.
AI-OS provides a unique user experience. While I have used AI applications on my phone and through web services, the Electra AI bar is a part of this OS and enables seamless interaction with the system itself.
Trust and Security First
Raymer prioritizes security in AI-OS. During the installation and configuration, I encountered a few issues, but Electra AI guided me through fixing them. For example, when I struggled with enabling certain settings, Electra outlined its steps and sought my permission before proceeding, ensuring a transparent and safe process.
In contrast to other AI platforms where I had to share screenshots for help, Electra worked directly within the system, proving far more efficient.
More Than Just Repair
The Electra AI performs a wide array of functions beyond troubleshooting. A standout feature is its finance bot, designed to generate revenue through various streams like affiliate marketing, blogging, and even printables.
One fun addition is the floating virtual pet, which allows users to interact by clicking on it. While this feature may not appeal to everyone, it adds a whimsical touch to the experience.
Inside the AI Center
Raymer mentions that AI-OS tracks activities using a Heartbeat agent, ensuring every action is monitored. It also integrates a long-term memory system, called Mempalace, for improved functionality. The OS allows for custom plugins, enabling users to expand its capabilities easily.
Affordable Access to Advanced AI
AI-OS offers users a free or paid subscription model. A free version allows for limited access, while paid plans increase daily AI requests significantly. Raymer assures that any fees are only to cover costs, emphasizing that the project is not about profit.
For users not wanting to subscribe, the ISO includes an offline AI model, which can be used if the hardware supports it. Subscribers can access over 80 high-quality AI models for more complex tasks.
