India’s Boxing Team Shines at Commonwealth Games
India’s boxing team had an incredible day at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, making their mark by securing five wins in the quarterfinals. This impressive performance means that all five athletes have now guaranteed themselves at least a bronze medal as they move on to the semifinals.
Ankush Yadav, Sakshi Chaudhary, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, and Narender Berwal all triumphed in their matches, continuing India’s strong showing with a total of nine semifinalists already.
Strong Start for Sakshi
Sakshi Chaudhary was one of the first to claim victory, dominating her fight against Northern Ireland’s Caitlin Fryers in the women’s 51kg category. With a decisive 5-0 score, Sakshi showcased her skillful jabs and movement. She had shifted from the 54kg weight class and used her reach to keep her opponent at bay.
After the match, Sakshi shared her strategy: “I focused on boxing from a distance, while she tried to get in close.” Despite Fryers’ attempts to pressure her, Sakshi maintained control throughout the fight and earned a unanimous decision.
Arundhati’s Challenging Match
Arundhati Choudhary also moved on to the semifinals, narrowly defeating New Zealand’s Morgan Henderson in the women’s 70kg category. Unlike Sakshi’s clear win, Arundhati faced tougher competition but ultimately secured a 3-1 victory.
Sachin’s Impressive Performance
Former world youth champion Sachin Siwach continued his great form in the men’s 60kg division with a flawless performance against Botswana’s Treasure Moremi. Earning a unanimous 5-0 decision, Sachin impressed all the judges with his calmness and precise boxing.
Ankush Yadav’s Commanding Win
Ankush Yadav followed suit in the men’s 80kg quarterfinal, delivering a strong performance against Seychelles’ Jade Micock. The World Boxing Cup Finals silver medalist took control from the start, winning every round with sharp combinations and solid defense. His final scores showed his dominance, with a unanimous 5-0 victory.
Narender Berwal’s Close Call
Narender Berwal completed the day’s success by winning a split decision against Samoa’s Michael Seko. Staying patient at first, Berwal relied on smart attacks to lead in the first round. After facing some challenges in the second round, he bounced back with strong punches and two knockdowns, securing his spot in the semifinals.
Looking Ahead
The focus now shifts to Jaismine Lamboria, who is set to face England’s Elise Glynn in the women’s 57kg quarterfinal later today. A win for Jaismine would make it six Indian semifinalists for the day, raising the total number of guaranteed boxing medals to ten for India.
