BJP’s New Strategy to Connect with Gen Z
In a bid to resonate with younger voters, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is shifting its communication style from traditional speeches to engaging, relatable content suited for social media. This change comes on the heels of the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) protests, which emerged as a powerful youth movement against exam irregularities. The protests, originating from Jantar Mantar in Delhi, gained momentum and led to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The CJP was born on social media shortly after Chief Justice of India’s controversial remarks referring to some youth as “cockroaches.” This led Abhijeet Dipke, a Boston University graduate, to create the CJP. The movement quickly transformed from a social media joke into a significant protest force, attracting widespread attention and support.
Engaging Gen Z
To connect with this demographic, the BJP has been actively sharing videos that incorporate pop culture, relatable dialogues, and everyday scenarios. One recent video cleverly references the iconic TV show F.R.I.E.N.D.S., assuring students that PM Modi “will be there for you” while addressing concerns regarding exam safety and government transparency.
The messaging highlights the government’s dedication to the dreams of young Indians, emphasizing that “no injustice will be tolerated.” Another video, set in a gym, features a light-hearted exchange between young people and an elder trainer discussing the future and historical inspirations. The playful banter, filled with current slang, discusses the progress India has made while acknowledging past challenges.
Aiming for Accountability
BJP MPs are also using their speeches to engage with youth, highlighting past exam paper leaks and stressing the importance of holding previous governments accountable for these issues. In one clip, BJP MP Anurag Thakur lists significant incidents of alleged exam leaks, showcasing a commitment to reform.
Modi’s Social Media Presence
In a direct effort to address the youth’s concerns, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released several selfie videos amidst the rising protests, reaffirming the government’s commitment to resolving exam issues. He has encouraged his Cabinet to prioritize engagement with young citizens on platforms like Instagram, recognizing the need to connect with this vital group.
The CJP’s rise to prominence stemmed from the reaction to the Chief Justice’s remarks, which many youth found offensive. Rather than being deterred, Dipke and his followers turned this sentiment into a rallying point, quickly gaining millions of online supporters.
Amid escalating protests demanding accountability, the announcement of Education Minister Pradhan’s resignation marked a significant moment for the movement and highlighted the power of youth activism in contemporary India.
Overall, as the BJP continues to adapt its communication strategy, it aims to bridge the gap with young voters by using familiar content that speaks to their interests and concerns.
