Protests in India End After Education Minister Resigns
Demonstrators in India have announced the end of their protests following the resignation of the education minister and the government’s acceptance of their main demands. The youth-led movement, known as the “cockroach” movement, began over accusations of leaks in university entrance exams.
In May, authorities canceled the results of medical school entrance exams due to suspected paper leaks. This decision led to widespread protests as students were forced to retake the exams. The protesters had called for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
On Saturday, Pradhan shared that he had submitted his resignation to the prime minister, hoping it would allow students to concentrate on their studies without further distractions.
The “Cockroach Janta Party” emerged on social media in response to remarks made by India’s chief justice, who likened unemployed youth to cockroaches.
At a recent news conference, the group stated, “All our demands have been accepted,” urging fellow demonstrators to end their protests promptly.
Despite the minister’s resignation, reports indicate that protests are still occurring in the western state of Rajasthan. Media outlets report that opposition figures are continuing to call for accountability from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
