Colon Cancer Diagnosis Surprises Fitness Advocate Maria Kang
Maria Kang, a well-known fitness expert from California, has dedicated her career to promoting health and wellness among mothers. Despite her efforts to maintain a healthy lifestyle, she was stunned when diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in November 2023.
At 46 years old, Kang gained fame in 2013 when a photo of her fit body with her three young sons went viral. The image, tagged with “What’s your excuse?”, positioned her as the “No Excuse Mom,” inspiring countless wellness groups globally.
Reflecting on her diagnosis, Kang revealed, “It was a complete shock — I considered myself the healthiest person around.” She initially sought to understand why this happened to her, especially since she had always made healthier choices. Throughout her life, however, she had struggled with digestive issues, believing they were merely a part of her journey.
Kang’s health took a turn when she underwent a colonoscopy, which confirmed a tumor. She briefly tried alternative treatments before starting chemotherapy. After one session, a hospital visit revealed that the tumor had shrunk, leading to a major surgery where doctors removed the tumor and parts of her colon and reproductive organs.
Now, Kang’s health checks show no signs of cancer, yet she is closely monitored for any changes. She’s learned that health isn’t just about looking good; it’s also about truly feeling well inside.
An alarming trend shows that colorectal cancer rates are increasing among those under 50, with estimates suggesting nearly 159,000 new cases in 2026 in America alone. Doctors advise starting regular screenings at age 45, especially for those with risk factors.
Kang emphasizes that wellness has taken on a new meaning for her. She used to have strict exercise routines but now prefers activities like walking and dancing, prioritizing enjoyment over obligation. Her approach to food has also transformed, focusing on balance rather than strict rules.
“It could happen to anybody,” she warns. “Health is not just about appearance. It’s how you feel inside.” Kang’s journey serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of listening to our bodies.
