David Warner’s cricket journey has hit a serious bump after he pleaded guilty to a drink-driving charge, putting his role as captain of the Sydney Thunder in jeopardy.
On Wednesday, in a Sydney court, Warner’s lawyer, Bobby Hill, submitted a guilty plea for the 39-year-old, who did not attend the hearing. This charge stems from an incident on Easter Sunday when Warner was stopped by police in Maroubra, Sydney. Authorities reported that Warner had pulled over just short of a breath-testing checkpoint and was approached by officers.
A breath test at a police station later revealed Warner had a blood alcohol level of 0.104, which is over twice the legal limit in Australia, set at 0.05.
Speaking to reporters outside the court, Hill admitted that Warner regrets his “reckless and foolish decision” to drive after having three glasses of wine at a friend’s place, with his last sip just 11 minutes before he got behind the wheel instead of choosing a ride-sharing service.
Warner’s formal sentencing is scheduled for August 18. Under New South Wales law, a mid-range drink-driving offense carries penalties including up to nine months in jail, fines up to A$2,200, and an automatic driving ban of six to twelve months.

The immediate consequences of this conviction could endanger Warner’s captaincy at Sydney Thunder as the next Big Bash League season approaches.
This situation puts him at odds with Cricket NSW, which promotes road safety in partnership with the New South Wales Government. Cricket NSW Chief Executive Lee Germon expressed concern over the allegations, stating, “We take them very seriously. At Cricket NSW, we are strong advocates for safe driving, not drink-driving.”
Warner’s captaincy role is particularly delicate. He only regained the chance to lead in Australian cricket late in 2024 after Cricket Australia lifted a lifetime ban linked to the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. This latest incident raises concerns about the support Warner needs to keep his captaincy.
Cricket NSW and Sydney Thunder officials are expected to review Warner’s leadership position following his sentencing next month.
