Electra Launches Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Factory in Springfield, Ohio

Electra is set to establish its first production facility for the innovative EL9 Ultra Short hybrid-electric aircraft in Springfield, Ohio. This project represents an investment of $850 million and is expected to create around 1,975 jobs in Clark County. The EL9 aircraft, which can carry nine passengers, features advanced blown-lift technology and can take off and land in just 150 feet.

The new factory will occupy 96 acres at AirPark Ohio, conveniently located next to the Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport. In its initial phase, the facility aims to produce up to 400 aircraft annually, with the potential to double that number to 800 in a later phase.

Governor Mike DeWine, JobsOhio President and CEO J.P. Nauseef, and Electra CEO Marc Allen announced this exciting development at the Farnborough International Airshow in England.

Importance of the Project

This construction marks a significant boost for Ohio’s advanced air mobility sector. Electra, based in Manassas, Virginia, is now positioned to manufacture aircraft focused on short-field operations and efficient point-to-point travel. Nauseef emphasized that Ohio provides Electra with prime access to essential testing infrastructure, a skilled workforce in aerospace, and strong manufacturing support stemming from nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Key Facts

  • Investment: $850 million in Springfield and Clark County
  • Jobs Created: 1,975
  • Initial Capacity: 400 aircraft per year
  • Full Capacity: 800 aircraft per year
  • Locations Evaluated: Over 140 during site selection

Why Springfield?

Electra chose Springfield after a year-long search, considering more than 140 different locations. Key factors for the selection included access to the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence and its closeness to strategic facilities like Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Community Feedback

Governor DeWine remarked, “Ohio is where flight started, and the Dayton-Springfield area is becoming a leading hub for advanced air mobility, pushing the boundaries of aircraft design and production.” Electra’s CEO, Allen, noted that this initiative marks a new chapter in aviation, aiming to make flights more direct and accessible to local communities.

What Lies Ahead

Construction plans for the facility will begin promptly, with an expected start date set for next year. Electra is also seeking a Job Creation Tax Credit from the Ohio Department of Development. The EL9 Ultra Short has been submitted for FAA certification, with its first flight anticipated by late 2027 or early 2028.
