Virat Kohli Pays Tribute to Sir Garfield Sobers
The cricket community is in mourning following the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers, who died at the age of 89 on July 18. This news was announced officially by Cricket West Indies on their social media account.
Virat Kohli, a prominent figure in cricket, shared a heartfelt message, expressing that the sport has lost one of its greatest talents. He emphasized that Sobers’ legacy will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers. Kohli also recalled a special encounter with Sobers during India’s recent tour of the Caribbean in 2023.
“Cricket has lost one of its greatest. Rest in peace, Sir Garfield Sobers. Your legacy will inspire generations,” Kohli wrote on social media.
Kohli has often spoken about his admiration for Sobers, even sharing a photo of their meeting in 2016, where he felt fortunate to converse with the legendary player.
Many others joined Kohli in honoring Sobers. Virender Sehwag, the England cricket board, and BCCI president Mithun Manhas also expressed their condolences. Sachin Tendulkar reflected on their shared memories, mentioning Sobers’ kindness and support throughout his career.
Tendulkar wrote, “It’s incredibly tough to process that Sir Garry is gone. I’m recalling the moments we shared, like when he awarded me the Player of the Tournament trophy at the 2003 World Cup. I will cherish those memories forever. Rest in peace, Sir Garry.”
Sunil Gavaskar spoke about Sobers’ significant impact on cricket, stating, “This is probably the saddest day for the game of cricket. Sir Garfield Sobers was the greatest cricketer to ever walk the earth. No words can truly capture his essence.”
Sobers was lauded as the pinnacle of all-rounders, displaying exceptional skills in batting, bowling, and fielding. He started his international career as a teenager and played 93 Test matches, scoring 8,032 runs, taking 235 wickets, and making 109 catches.
His remarkable unbeaten score of 365 runs against Pakistan in 1958 was a record at the time. In 1968, he famously became the first cricketer to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket. These achievements, alongside his knighthood and inclusion in the ICC Hall of Fame, solidified his place among the all-time greats of the sport.
Sir Garfield Sobers will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of cricket fans and players around the world.
