Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Onslaught Leaves Tilak Varma Shaken; South Zone Skipper Turns to Sledging Against Teen Sensation

Duleep Trophy Final: East Zone Takes Charge on Day 1

In a captivating start to the Duleep Trophy final, Tilak Varma found himself engaged in some light-hearted sledging against young player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. This playful banter occurred on Day 1 as East Zone faced off against South Zone. During the match, as Vaibhav and his teammate, Abhimanyu Easwaran, dominated the South Zone bowlers, Tilak briefly lost his composure and attempted to rattle Vaibhav around the 10th over.

Tilak, trying to disrupt Vaibhav’s focus—who had just hit Mohammed Siraj for runs—approached him and remarked, “Kya re ye vice-captain?” before walking away. Despite his antics, Tilak’s words didn’t seem to faze Vaibhav, as both he and Easwaran continued to find runs with ease.

By the 14th over, Easwaran had already reached his half-century, scoring 50 runs off just 46 balls. Vaibhav was well on his way to a fifty as well but fell short in the 16th over when he mistimed a delivery from left-arm pacer CV Milind.

The early exchanges of the match set the tone as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran combined to score 100 runs within their first 15 overs, a strong start considering the pitch conditions that suggested caution would be necessary in the early stages.

Match Progress Report
East Zone captain Ishan Kishan won the toss and chose to bat, anticipating there might be some assistance for fast bowlers early in the match. Mohammed Siraj’s opening over displayed some seam and bounce, but the East Zone players skillfully broke down the South Zone bowling attack. While Vaibhav mainly targeted the off-side, Easwaran targeted the leg side effectively.

Due to their impressive performance, Tilak felt compelled to adopt a defensive strategy, placing five fielders near the boundaries—a move not often seen in longer formats of the game.

South Zone did manage to dismiss both openers during the first session, with Vaibhav falling to a short ball and Easwaran run out after a mix-up with S Mohan. By the end of the first session, East Zone had amassed 133 runs for the loss of two wickets.

As the match unfolds, spectators will be eagerly watching how both teams respond to the shifting momentum.
