Jensen Huang’s Signature Jacket Sells for Nearly $1 Million at Auction
In a surprising turn of events, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s distinctive black leather jacket fetched a staggering $960,000 at a recent Sotheby’s auction, showcasing the growing interest in collectibles related to the artificial intelligence (AI) field. The jacket, worn by Huang during a 2023 event in Taipei, attracted 65 bids from 45 eager collectors, ultimately selling for nearly 16 times its estimated value of $40,000 to $60,000. The funds raised will benefit the Edge Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering innovation through fellowships, grants, and residency programs.
A Signature Style
For nearly 20 years, Jensen Huang has been recognized for his signature black leather jackets, frequently donning them at product launches, company gatherings, and tech conferences. He has lightheartedly commented on his fashion choices, revealing that his wife and daughter often pick out his outfits. During a Reddit chat back in 2016, he humorously referred to himself as “the guy in the leather jacket.”
His unique style has also drawn attention from fellow tech leaders. In 2024, during a friendly “jersey swap,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg exchanged jackets with Huang. Later that same year, at a computer graphics conference, Huang gifted Zuckerberg another jacket, to which Zuckerberg joked, “This is worth more because it’s used.”
Auction Highlights
The auction on July 17 generated impressive excitement, with the jacket selling for a price well above its original retail value of just under $10,000. Sotheby’s noted that Huang had personally signed the jacket, adding to its allure for collectors interested in tech and AI memorabilia. Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles, expressed amazement at the auction’s success, stating, “The response to this sale surpassed even our highest expectations.”
With 45 bidders clamoring for the iconic piece, this auction not only underscores the demand for tech-related collectibles but also highlights the unique cultural significance of Huang’s jacket in the ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence.
