Miami’s Unsung Hero in the Ice Business

Meet Eric Goeres, Owner of Alaska Ice Corp.

At 47, Eric Goeres has made an unexpected shift from a successful 20-year career in media to running a business that produces something most people take for granted: ice. In February, Eric acquired Alaska Ice Corp, a small ice manufacturing company in Miami. He calls this move a choice for a “future-proof” opportunity, noting, “Ice is vital; it can’t be disrupted by social media, online shopping, or foreign production.”

A Business Built on Chill

As dawn breaks in Miami, the heat is already rising above 30°C. At Plaza Seafood Market, Sergio Yanez and his team arrange freshly delivered seafood on top of pristine ice. This vital frozen resource is supplied by Goeres’ company and arrives in hefty cloth bags weighing 500 kg. “Ice is crucial for us,” Yanez explains. “Whenever our machines break down, Alaska Ice always has our back.”

In Miami’s steamy summers, where average temperatures hover around 31°C, the bright-yellow warning sign at Alaska Ice Corp about icy conditions seems almost humorous. Yet, inside the facility, large ice-making machines chug away, cranking out nearly 45,500 kg of ice on busy days. Hard hats are a must in the frigid packing room.

Delivering Freshness

Alaska Ice Corp’s manager, JC Pino, navigates a forklift to load ice bags into trucks destined for various local businesses. Besides serving seafood markets, their ice helps keep products cold for flower imports and food trucks delivering meals across the city. Goeres emphasizes that “our ice is essential for the workers building Miami’s future,” showcasing the company’s role in not just food preservation but community support.

What It Means to Sell Ice

“It’s just frozen water,” admits Goeres with a laugh. “It doesn’t involve the internet or social media likes. That simple, tactile nature is what draws me to this business.”

Funding Tips for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Navigating Business Loans Doesn’t Have to be Scary

You have a business plan, a small team, and a good dose of confidence. Now comes the challenge of funding, which can be intimidating. Fortunately, some banks are changing their policies to help entrepreneurs create unique business ventures.

While traditional banks often hesitate to take risks, some banks offer supportive networks and advice. In the UK, Aldermore and Triodos Bank focus on helping businesses that contribute positively to society and the environment. Meanwhile, tech-driven banks like Tide and Mercury make banking accessible but lack personal touch, something organizations like Bira address directly.

Quick Loans, Quick Solutions

Bira, established in 1955, supports independent retailers and offers quick loan processing, often approving applications within days. Their primary mission is to put members first, ensuring funds go towards worthwhile advancements rather than just maximizing profits.

Simplifying Business Language

Avoiding Corporate Jargon

In business communication, words matter. Using plain language helps convey your company’s values clearly. Recognizing common buzzwords can assist in keeping communication straightforward.

Some Examples:

  • Synergy: Often implies two ideas working together, but really means neither idea was strong enough initially.
  • Going Forward: Suggests moving ahead but indicates earlier confusion or inaction.

Business Succession Success Stories

BlattChaya, Beirut

BlattChaya, a Lebanese tile company, has thrived under Edgard Chaya’s guidance for two decades. His children are eager to continue the family legacy, marrying tradition with fresh ideas to keep the brand relevant.

One Entrepreneur, Two Ventures

Andras Fugerth operates Hadrianus and Möbelkunst

In Budapest, Fugerth runs two distinct businesses: Hadrianus, an IT salvage company, and Möbelkunst, specializing in mid-century furniture. Both thrive on a shared business model, allowing him to merge environmental consciousness with design passion.

Seeking Help to Thrive

Community Support Matters

When Halo Brewery opened in Toronto, owner Callum Hay found assistance in local businesses. The close-knit community helped him develop his brand and connect with creative minds that enhanced the brewery’s identity.

Mastering the Pitch

Marie Perruchet’s Guide to Storytelling

Having worked in Silicon Valley, Perruchet highlights the importance of storytelling in pitches. To truly connect with your audience, be authentic and share your struggles and triumphs to create an engaging narrative.

Key Tips Include:

  1. Keep it brief; grab attention quickly.
  2. Be clear and precise.
  3. Show your true self; authenticity resonates.

Final Thoughts

Building a successful business means navigating challenges and avoiding jargon while maintaining a community-oriented mindset. Whether you’re producing ice or running a design firm, embracing simplicity and authenticity lays the foundation for lasting success.
