Courtois Substituted Due to Injury in Belgium’s World Cup Defeat

In a tough match during the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, Belgium’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had to leave the field due to a muscle injury. This occurred during Belgium’s 2-1 loss to Spain, where Courtois admitted he couldn’t kick the ball properly anymore.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper had been performing exceptionally well throughout the tournament, helping to keep Spain at bay until he suffered his injury midway through the second half at SoFi Stadium. After receiving treatment, Courtois made a brief effort to continue playing but soon had to be replaced by Senne Lammens.

After the match, Courtois explained that he felt he could push through after a hydration break, but realized he couldn’t execute accurate long kicks, which are crucial for his role. He mentioned, “I wanted to stay in, but I couldn’t kick the ball 80 meters.”

Belgium’s head coach, Rudi Garcia, confirmed that the decision to substitute Courtois was based on his visible struggle. Garcia noted the importance of having a fully fit goalkeeper for their strategy.

Lammens, who stepped in for Courtois, faced a challenging start. In the 88th minute, a low shot from Pau Cubarsi slipped past him, allowing Mikel Merino to capitalize on the rebound and score, securing Spain’s spot in the semifinals.

Following the final whistle, emotional scenes unfolded on the Belgium bench. Courtois was seen visibly upset about the loss and consoled Lammens after the tough moment.

This match marked a disappointing turn for Belgium, who were already without key players like their captain, Youri Tielemans, and midfielder Amadou Onana, who suffered an injury earlier in the tournament.

Despite pushing Spain hard and equalizing through Charles De Ketelaere, Belgium fell just short in the end. Now, as they await further assessments, there is uncertainty regarding the severity of Courtois’ injury, but initial indications suggest it is muscular rather than due to a collision.

Courtois’ exit will be remembered as a pivotal moment in Belgium’s heart-wrenching World Cup campaign, as they came very close to forcing extra time before the injury and an unfortunate goalkeeping mishap led to their elimination.
