Sourav Ganguly Inducted into ICC Hall of Fame on His 54th Birthday
On his 54th birthday, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly received a prestigious accolade, being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. He now stands as the 12th Indian and the 10th male cricketer from India to be honored with this recognition.
Ganguly joins an esteemed group of Indian cricket legends, including the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and MS Dhoni. The official induction ceremony is set to occur during the ICC’s event on Saturday, July 11, right after the governing body’s annual conference wraps up.
Expressing his gratitude, Ganguly took to social media to thank the ICC and Jay Shah, the ICC Chairman. “Thank you, ICC and Chairman Jay Shah, for this amazing honor. To be one of 10 Indians in the Hall of Fame is truly special,” he shared.
A Glimpse into Sourav Ganguly’s Brilliant Career
Sourav Ganguly is remembered as one of India’s finest cricket captains, changing the team’s approach in the early 2000s. He led a fearless squad that took on top teams both at home and overseas. Throughout his career, he scored a remarkable 18,575 runs across all formats, with 38 centuries to his name.
In Tests, he recorded 7,212 runs from 113 matches, holding an average of 42.17, including 16 hundreds. Meanwhile, in ODIs, he made 11,363 runs in 311 games, boasting an average of 41.02 and 22 centuries. His opening partnership with Sachin Tendulkar remains one of the most successful in cricket history.
As a captain, Ganguly guided India to the finals of the 2003 ODI World Cup and was celebrated for his leadership during the triumphant 2002 NatWest Trophy, famously waving his shirt from the balcony of Lord’s.
Ganguly also played an essential role in mentoring future cricket stars such as MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, paving the way for India’s emergence as a major force in global cricket.
