Kyiv Under Heavy Attack: Latest Developments
Kyiv, Ukraine—In one of the most intense attacks since the start of the war, Russia targeted Kyiv overnight, launching hundreds of drones and missiles. Reports indicate the strike resulted in at least 18 fatalities and over 90 injuries.
Andrii Melnyk, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations, stated that this assault represents “the most horrific night for Kyiv” since the war’s onset. In a conversation with his family in Kyiv, Melnyk shared their overwhelming fear, describing an atmosphere akin to a biblical apocalypse with everyone praying for safety.
The explosions rattled major areas of Kyiv for hours, forcing many residents to seek refuge in bomb shelters and metro stations. This attack caused extensive destruction across the city, marking the deadliest incident since May when a previous attack resulted in 24 deaths.
According to Ukraine’s air force, the assault involved an unprecedented launch of 74 missiles and 496 drones. Yuri Ihnat, a spokesperson for the air force, noted that intercepting the high number of ballistic missiles has been challenging due to a shortage of critical defense systems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who interrupted a trip to Ireland to return home, reported damage at over 20 sites, emphasizing that Kyiv was the main target. He described the need for enhanced air defense supplies as crucial for the country’s safety.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced a day of mourning for the victims and highlighted the widespread damage throughout the city, home to around 3 million people.
Melnyk pointed out that the attack should push the international community to reconsider Russia’s membership on the U.N. Security Council. He stated, “This barbaric Russia continues to be treated as a normal member state,” urging for a reassessment of Russia’s status.
Emergency workers have been tirelessly searching the remnants of a nine-story building, where some individuals are still reported trapped amidst the wreckage. Video footage displayed frightening scenes of explosions outside residential areas, with smoke rising across the skyline. More than 20 locations faced damage, including residential buildings and diplomatic housing.
Katarina Mathernova, the European Union’s ambassador to Ukraine, condemned the violence, stating Russia “unleashed hell.” Although no diplomats were hurt, their properties were unfortunately affected by the fire.
Russia’s Defense Ministry framed their actions as a response to prior Ukrainian drone strikes, claiming their attacks targeted military and energy facilities. In a concurrent incident, Ukraine reportedly struck an oil refinery in Russia.
Poland took precautionary measures by scrambling fighter jets, while Finland restricted its airspace momentarily in response to heightened tensions. Romanian officials reported detecting Russian drones near their border, prompting NATO air patrols to monitor the situation closely.
In response to the ongoing assaults, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced intentions to propose new sanctions against entities aiding Russia’s military efforts, stating that increased attacks on civilians necessitate reinforced international measures.
This latest wave of violence underscores the continued toll of the conflict, with countless civilian casualties reported throughout the war. Moscow, however, insists that strikes on infrastructure are legitimate, asserting they impact Ukraine’s military capabilities.
