India Keeps in Touch with German Authorities About Ariha Shah’s Case
India is actively communicating with German officials regarding the situation of Ariha Shah, a young girl who has been in foster care in Germany for almost five years. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) assured on Friday that efforts are being made to maintain her cultural upbringing during this time.
Ariha was placed in German foster care in September 2021 at just seven months old after an accident involving her grandmother. Since then, she has been living in foster homes in Germany.
During a press conference, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the ongoing case, stating that Indian diplomats are closely monitoring Ariha’s well-being and cultural needs. “I don’t have any new updates on this matter,” he mentioned, but reassured that the embassy is in regular contact with both the child and the German authorities concerning her situation.
Earlier this year, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized India’s commitment to collaborating with German authorities on Ariha’s case, highlighting a humanitarian approach and offering support to her family. Misri stated that India has been in continuous communication with German officials, both in India and Germany, regarding the matter.
“This case was once considered solely a legal issue, but we believe it should also focus on the humanitarian aspects involved,” he added.
Concern for Ariha’s Well-Being
A group known as the “Save Ariha Team” has expressed serious concerns about the extended separation from her family. Earlier this year, they called on the Indian government to take diplomatic steps for her return, especially before the German Chancellor’s visit to India in January. Reports indicate that India raised the issue during this official visit.
According to the Save Ariha Team, despite all police cases against Ariha’s parents being closed in February 2022, she remains under the care of German Child Services (Jugendamt) in Berlin. Since her placement, Ariha has moved through five different foster homes.
In 2024, a German higher court recommended that Ariha be placed in a facility where she could stay with her parents. However, this recommendation has not been put into action, and she continues to be under the custody of German authorities. Currently, there are no active legal proceedings concerning her custody, which leaves her future uncertain.
The group has raised alarms about possible violations of Ariha’s fundamental rights and continues to advocate for her well-being and return.
