Tech Giants Are Embedding Engineers in Client Offices
In a surprising move, major technology companies have decided that simply selling AI software isn’t enough anymore. Over the last few months, five leading firms—Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic—have announced plans to send thousands of their engineers to work directly in client offices. This approach aims to create effective AI systems in real-world business settings.
These initiatives represent a massive investment of around $9 billion, involving tens of thousands of engineers, all focused on making AI functional beyond just demonstrations. Microsoft recently unveiled its bold plan called the “Microsoft Frontier Company,” which comes with a $2.5 billion investment and a team of 6,000 experts. This announcement followed Amazon Web Services’ commitment of $1 billion to a similar project.
The Rise of Forward-Deployed Engineers
A key position driving this trend is the forward-deployed engineer (FDE). These specialists work directly in clients’ offices to develop and implement AI systems on-site, rather than just providing the software and leaving. LinkedIn data shows that demand for FDE roles has skyrocketed, increasing 42 times over the last two years. Industry leaders are recognizing this as one of the most sought-after jobs in tech.
The reason behind this growing demand is clear; merely offering AI models is no longer enough to close business deals. Studies show that around 95% of AI projects among businesses fail to show a positive impact on profits, often due to poor integration rather than issues with the models themselves. To successfully implement AI within established systems and navigate internal challenges, hands-on support is necessary.
How Other Companies are Following Suit
OpenAI and Anthropic are two companies that kicked off this trend. They both launched their own deployment arms backed by significant investment. Anthropic teamed up with Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, and others, creating a venture valued at over $1.5 billion to support mid-sized businesses that may lack in-house AI skills. Meanwhile, OpenAI initiated its own deployment unit, securing over $4 billion in funding.
Meta has also started a similar initiative, creating an Enterprise Solutions unit focused on embedding engineers into client companies to facilitate AI integration. Shortly after, Amazon committed $1 billion to build its own Forward Deployed Engineering team, sparking partnerships with clients like the NBA and electronics maker Ricoh.
Microsoft’s Comprehensive Approach
Microsoft aims to make a significant splash with its Frontier Company. Rather than promoting just its AI models, Microsoft is positioning itself as a neutral provider that allows clients to use various AI technologies. This means businesses can choose between models from OpenAI, Anthropic, or even open-source alternatives while maintaining control over their data.
Early clients of Microsoft’s Frontier Company include notable firms like the London Stock Exchange, Unilever, and Novo Nordisk. Microsoft is collaborating with consultancies such as Accenture and EY to expand this initiative globally.
The overall strategy emphasizes that while the AI models themselves are becoming more standardized, the key to success lies in effectively integrating these tools into existing business frameworks. Microsoft’s approach focuses on having skilled professionals on-site who can adapt the AI systems to fit the specific needs of each company.
