Ronald Koeman Steps Down as Netherlands Head Coach After World Cup Exit
Ronald Koeman has announced his departure as head coach of the Netherlands following a surprising exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Dutch team faced Morocco in the Round of 32 and lost in a penalty shootout after a thrilling match.
The 63-year-old coach shared his decision on Instagram, feeling emotional after the narrow defeat. The Netherlands led the match until the 72nd minute, but a last-minute equalizer from Morocco sent the game into penalties, where the Dutch lost 3-2. This marked a disappointing exit, as it was the first time the Netherlands failed to reach the Round of 16 in their 12 World Cup appearances.
In his heartfelt post, Koeman said, “I decided to step down from my role as head coach. We had high hopes for this World Cup, and I feel deeply disappointed that we couldn’t achieve our dream. As the head coach, I take full responsibility.”
Reflecting on his coaching journey, Koeman mentioned his time at clubs like Ajax, Barcelona, and Everton, along with his two terms leading the Dutch national team. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had but acknowledged the pain of leaving under such circumstances.
Before the tournament, the Netherlands was ranked eighth in the FIFA rankings and topped Group F with wins against Sweden and Tunisia, plus a draw with Japan. Despite being favored to advance, they fell short against Morocco, which left the team and fans stunned.
Throughout the tournament, Koeman faced growing criticism for inconsistent performances. Dutch media pointed out sluggish gameplay and a lack of energy in the matches, despite the team finishing first in their group.
In his announcement, Koeman also hinted that he might be stepping back due to personal reasons. His wife’s health struggles have made him rethink his priorities. “Football has been my life, but I’ve learned that health is paramount,” he shared, expressing appreciation for his wife, Bartina, who has supported him through difficult times.
Nigel de Jong, the Dutch football association’s technical director, confirmed the campaign did not meet expectations. “We aimed for the semi-finals and hoped to be champions, but we must face the truth,” he said.
Koeman’s first tenure with the Netherlands began in 2018, and he left in 2020 to coach Barcelona. He returned to the national team in 2023, replacing Louis van Gaal, but unfortunately, could not fulfill the high hopes during his second stint.
