Train Collision Near Bedford Leaves One Dead and Nearly 90 Injured
Authorities are currently responding to a tragic accident that occurred on Friday involving two passenger trains near Bedford, England. The collision resulted in at least one fatality and injured almost 90 people.
The East of England Ambulance Service was alerted to the incident at Elstow, located near Bedford, around 5:15 PM local time. In response, they declared a “major incident” due to the severity of the situation.
According to officials, one person lost their life at the scene. Among the injured, 11 individuals sustained very serious injuries, while 22 others were reported to have serious injuries, and 56 suffered minor injuries. All those with critical injuries have been transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Bedford is approximately 60 miles north of London.
Emergency services dispatched over 20 ambulances and specialized response teams to the crash site, along with six air ambulances to aid in the rescue efforts.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we are grateful to all emergency service personnel for their rapid response,” stated a spokesperson for the ambulance service. The Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed that its teams were on the scene.
Officials advised the public to refrain from visiting the area as emergency crews work to manage the situation. Reports suggest that the train driver was in communication with maintenance staff regarding a safety issue at the time of the crash.
