Trump Praises Modi as a Dynamic Leader
In a recent interview with Axios, former US President Donald Trump spoke highly of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a “great leader” and a “tough guy.” Trump noted Modi’s long tenure of over 12 years in power, emphasizing his leadership style amid global challenges.
Trump mentioned that both Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping rank among his favorite leaders due to their ability to command influence and drive significant decisions. He highlighted India’s population of 1.5 billion, calling the country the largest democracy and praising Modi for maintaining stability and avoiding military conflicts.
Reflecting on trade relations, Trump acknowledged that the United States and India are doing more business together now compared to the past, when he claimed that former leaders allowed India to take advantage of trade agreements. “Now it’s fair business,” he stated, suggesting that some in India may not be pleased with these changes as they had benefited more previously.
He described Modi’s leadership as marked by respect and strength, adding, “I know the real Modi is a very tough cookie.” Trump met with Modi during the G-7 Summit in France, aiming to strengthen ties between the two nations after a challenging year.
Commenting on India’s political landscape, Trump observed the frequent changes in leadership before Modi’s rise. “Leaders would come and go every few months, but Modi has brought a sense of stability,” he explained, noting the paradox of Modi’s calm demeanor paired with his strong leadership capabilities.
As part of the discussion, Trump acknowledged other leaders he admires, including Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, expanding on the complex dynamics of international leadership.
