The United States has secured a spot in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026, becoming the second team, after co-hosts Mexico, to do so. They achieved this with a solid 2-0 victory over Australia on Friday. Under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, the team has now won both of their matches, marking their first consecutive wins in a World Cup since 1929.

The Americans opened their campaign with a strong 4-1 win against Paraguay, and in front of an excited home crowd, they delivered another confident performance. The game’s first goal came from an own goal by Cameron Burgess, followed by a VAR-reviewed header from Alex Freeman that solidified their lead and pushed them into the Round of 32.

With this win, the United States sits atop Group D with six points. In contrast, Australia has three points and needs a positive outcome against Paraguay to keep their qualification hopes alive.

### Early Goals Put USA in Control

The match took just 11 minutes for the United States to find the net. Folarin Balogun sprinted past the Australian defense and sent a low cross into the penalty area. Burgess attempted to clear the ball but accidentally scored an own goal.

After that early set back, Australia struggled to respond as the Americans maintained their pace and control over the game. Although the Socceroos had some possession, they rarely threatened the U.S. defense.

Just before halftime, the USA thought they had made it 2-0 when Alex Freeman scored a header from close range. Initially, the assistant referee ruled the goal offside, but after a VAR review, it was confirmed, leading to joyous celebrations from the home fans. This goal added to Australia’s struggles right before the break.

### USA Maintains Strong Performance

Building on their impressive show against Paraguay, the United States once again exhibited good organization and discipline. While they may not have been overly flashy with their attacking style, they managed the game effectively. Australia found it hard to create significant chances, and the Americans comfortably defended their two-goal lead in the second half.

This victory is historically significant for the U.S. as it marks their first time winning their opening two World Cup matches since 1929. With their spot in the knockout stages secured, they can now approach their final Group D match against Turkey with confidence and aim to build more momentum.

For Australia, the situation is much more urgent. Their World Cup journey is now at a crucial point, with a must-win game against Paraguay needed to keep their hopes alive.
