The Rise of Cosmetic Surgery in Today’s Society

In today’s world, cosmetic surgery has taken a front-row seat, becoming a popular topic among both the wealthy and everyday people. With influencers, celebrities, and social media leading the way, enhancements like body contouring and cosmetic procedures are no longer whispered about in secrecy.

Gone are the days when people would hide their surgeries. Today, getting enhancements is as common as wearing designer accessories. Celebrities, like Kylie Jenner, openly discuss their choices on platforms like TikTok, making these topics more accessible and mainstream. For instance, Jenner shared the specifics of her breast augmentation, showcasing how open the conversation has become.

This shift in attitudes has given rise to a new standard of beauty frequently referred to as the “Mar-a-Lago face,” characterized by defined features, full lips, and taut skin. Women are increasingly opting for procedures that enhance their body shape, aspiring for ideal figures that include sculpted breasts and narrow waists.

Cosmetic surgeons are promoting these surgeries as valuable investments for success. The influence of social media is significant, driving many to seek out injectables, facials, and various treatments in pursuit of a youthful appearance. In South Korea, for instance, soldiers are even returning from duty with injuries from surgeries like rhinoplasty, indicating the lengths to which people will go for beauty.

According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, nearly 38 million cosmetic procedures were performed globally in 2024, marking a remarkable increase of 42.5% over the last few years. The most popular procedures include eyelid surgery, liposuction, and breast augmentation, with South Korea leading the world in cosmetic enhancements per capita.

A new trend known as “looksmaxxing” has emerged, where individuals, primarily young men, attempt extreme and harmful methods to alter their appearances. This often includes physical trauma to the face in pursuit of a more defined look.

On the other hand, wealthy individuals are opting for advanced body contouring techniques, including the so-called “Barbie waist,” where surgeons reshape ribs for a slimmer look. Safety improvements in these procedures, such as new vessel-sealing technologies, have made them more appealing to patients.

Alongside these surgical options, the availability of quick, low-commitment treatments is rising in popularity. Non-invasive methods like biostimulation, which encourages skin regeneration, and short-term injectables that provide temporary results are becoming preferred choices for first-timers.

As the world becomes more digitally connected, particularly through platforms like TikTok, the desire for unique or striking looks has increased substantially. The non-invasive beauty treatment market is projected to experience significant growth in the coming years.

Yet, this pursuit of aesthetic perfection has its challenges. Some fashion designers are commenting on the obsession with beauty through satire. For example, a recent show featured models with exaggerated features that mocked the extremes of cosmetic enhancements.

As more people encounter AI-generated images portraying perfect symmetry and beauty, many are seeking similar looks for themselves, leading to high expectations when visiting surgeons. The rise of fantastical procedures, such as eye color changes or ear modifications, continues to reveal just how deeply intertwined our sense of self is with our appearance.

In summary, cosmetic surgery has transformed from a hidden practice to a prominent topic in modern culture, driven largely by social media and modern beauty standards. The human desire for aesthetic enhancement is strong, and as technology evolves, so too will the methods and aspirations behind looking one’s best.
