Barmer/Pali: Celebrated folk singer Gavri Devi passes away at 98
Gavri Devi, a renowned Mand folk singer known for her dedication to Rajasthan’s traditional music, passed away at her home in Pali district on Thursday evening. She was 98 years old.
According to her family, Gavri Devi had been dealing with health issues related to her age. She took her last breath around 8 PM at her family home in Gavri Nagar, Desuri. Her final rites were conducted on Friday, attended by various artists, fans, and members of the cultural community from across Rajasthan.
Gavri Devi was highly regarded as a leading figure in Mand singing, helping to introduce Rajasthan’s rich folk music heritage to audiences both in India and abroad. One of her most famous songs, “Kesariya Balam,” became a symbol of the state’s cultural identity and hospitality.
Throughout her extensive career, she dedicated herself to preserving and promoting Mand, a cherished folk tradition of Rajasthan that features expressive and romantic themes. This style of music is believed to have originated in the Jaisalmer region, historically tied to royal courts.
Some of her most well-loved songs include “Mor Bole Re Malji,” “Baga Chalo Kesariya,” “100 Koson Door Base Mara Sajan,” and “Dhola Mare Des Mein Nipje Teen Ratna.” Her devotional and Sufi-inspired performances were also celebrated by many.
Gavri Devi graced major cultural stages across the country and had a long-standing affiliation with Doordarshan and All India Radio. In recognition of her lifetime contributions to folk music, she was honored with the Veer Durgadas Rathore Lifetime Achievement Award by the Rajasthan government.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed his condolences, stating that her death represents an immense loss to the cultural heritage and folk music of Rajasthan. Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot echoed this sentiment, remarking that Gavri Devi’s legacy in Mand singing is irreplaceable and her passing is a significant loss for the arts and cultural sector of the state.
