Title: Rising AI Costs Challenge UK IT Leaders: A New Study Insights

A recent report from Asana reveals that a significant number of IT leaders in the UK have encountered unexpected AI expenses over the past year. The study highlights that 82% of IT decision-makers reported these unplanned costs, highlighting a disconnect between department coordination and effective IT management.

The findings indicate that about 60% of IT leaders feel a strong sense of responsibility for outcomes driven by AI. However, the challenge lies in the fact that AI is being integrated across various departments without proper governance procedures.

One of the major contributors to rising costs is the governance issues surrounding AI. Over half of the respondents—53%—acknowledged that AI tools or agents had made decisions in the last year that resulted in financial, legal, or reputational damage.

Christina Francis, head of UKI and Northern Europe at Asana, noted, “Most organizations are beyond the question of whether their teams will use AI; they already are. The current challenge is to turn that usage into measurable business benefits while maintaining the necessary governance and oversight to manage risks.”

She further emphasized the need for organizations to provide not just faster and smarter work methods, but to do so in a trusted manner. She questioned whether businesses can offer reliable tools or if employees will find ways around them.

Concerns about transparency are also prominent, with half of the UK workforce feeling unaware of how their contributions are utilized within their companies. Francis pointed out, “AI performs best when it has context—such as the goals, decisions, and workflows surrounding the work being done.”

She stressed the importance of transparency, stating that employees need to see how their work feeds into AI systems and the potential outcomes of that process. “The organizations that thrive will be those that see visibility, governance, and context as interconnected rather than separate challenges,” Francis concluded.
