West Indies Take Early Series Lead with Victory Over Sri Lanka

In a thrilling first T20I at Sabina Park on Thursday, West Indies captain Shai Hope led his team to victory against Sri Lanka, finishing with an unbeaten 65 runs as they chased down a target of 148 with four balls remaining. This win puts the West Indies ahead 1-0 in the three-match series.

Facing a challenging target, the West Indies made a strong start, building a 67-run partnership between Hope and opener Brandon King in just 38 balls. King, who faced several close calls early in his innings, scored 37 off 22 balls before being dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga. Despite the slow pitch, the quick scoring from the openers gave the West Indies a solid foundation for their chase.

Sri Lanka fought back during the middle overs, with Hasaranga taking two wickets for 32 runs, while Maheesh Theekshana’s disciplined bowling limited runs to just 20 in his four overs. Eshan Malinga also played a key role, taking a wicket for 26 runs, helping to keep the game tense until the end.

Needing six runs from the final over, Rovman Powell quickly ended the suspense by hitting a six off Dilshan Madushanka, sealing the victory for the home team.

Earlier, Sri Lanka had a promising start with Kusal Mendis making a brisk 36 runs off 23 balls. They reached 43 runs without losing a wicket, but the game turned when Jason Holder was introduced. He took immediate effect, dismissing Pathum Nissanka and trapping Lasith Croospulle lbw with a successful review, reducing Sri Lanka to 56 for 3 by the end of the Powerplay.

Kamindu Mendis showed resilience with a score of 51 runs off 39 balls, trying to stabilize the innings alongside Dasun Shanaka. However, the West Indies bowlers, led by Holder, maintained their grip on the match. Holder finished with remarkable figures of 3 wickets for 18 runs, earning him the Player of the Match accolade. Ultimately, Sri Lanka managed to post only 147 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, which proved insufficient as Hope guided his team to a solid win in the series opener.

This victory sets an exciting tone for the upcoming matches.
