Debutant Spinner Shines in Test Against Afghanistan

In an exciting display during the one-off Test against Afghanistan, debutant spinner Manav Suthar has caught the eye of cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. The young left-arm spinner’s impressive all-round performance includes taking three wickets and scoring 28 runs, suggesting he might be a strong candidate for a regular spot on India’s Test team.

Suthar’s bowling was crucial in keeping Afghanistan at 113 for five in response to India’s massive first-innings total of 564. His precise bowling and strong batting skills showed a lot of promise.

Gavaskar praised Suthar’s calmness and effectiveness in both aspects of the game, noting that his confidence with the bat was particularly impressive. “He looked comfortable at the crease and used his feet well,” Gavaskar remarked. He also highlighted the spinner’s accuracy, which consistently put opposing batters under pressure, regardless of the conditions.

While Gavaskar recognized that tougher challenges await, he felt that Suthar had made a positive start to his Test career. “This debut was encouraging; he has the potential to become a strong contender,” he added.

Former England spinner Graeme Swann also commended Suthar, pointing out how he quickly adjusted to the game. “From his first ball, he looked completely in control,” Swann said, noting that Suthar managed to create both dip and turn, even in his initial overs.

Swann emphasized Suthar’s ability to adapt during his bowling spell, which led to more wicket-taking chances as he changed his line effectively.

Gavaskar also praised fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, who adapted well to the conditions to secure two wickets. “Krishna showed great awareness,” he noted, as the bowler altered his lengths to suit the match situation, using fuller deliveries for better results.

Afghanistan’s Rahmat Shah also earned admiration for his steadfastness, scoring an unbeaten 43 runs. Gavaskar recognized Shah’s patience as key to helping his team avoid a deeper collapse, remarking that his disciplined approach reflects what is needed to succeed in Test cricket.

With India leading the match and Suthar making a solid impression on his debut, the young spinner has certainly given the selectors something to think about as they prepare for future Test selections.
