Saudi Arabia Launches World’s Largest Battery Energy Storage Project
Saudi Energy, previously known as Saudi Electricity Company, has proudly announced the launch of the largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the world. This impressive project boasts a total capacity of 2.5 gigawatts (GW) and utilizes advanced energy storage technology from BYD across five key locations in Saudi Arabia.
Alfanar Projects took on the role of the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor. They completed all five projects ahead of schedule, showcasing their expertise in handling large-scale energy initiatives and contributing to the transformation of Saudi Arabia’s power sector.
The project has passed all necessary testing for charging and discharging and is now officially operational. It is part of the third phase of Saudi Energy’s Energy Storage Program, providing support to five major regions: Riyadh, Rabigh, Dawadmi, Al Jouf, and Qassim.
The energy storage systems for this project were supplied by BYD Energy Storage, a leader in the energy storage industry. These cutting-edge battery systems are designed to bolster grid stability, enhance the integration of renewable energy, and aid Saudi Arabia in achieving its ambitious clean energy goals.
With over 2,000 Power Conversion System units, this project is now recognized as the largest grid-side energy storage cluster globally. The extensive energy network is set to improve the flexibility and reliability of the Saudi power system, increase grid regulation capabilities, and support the rising share of renewable energy, ultimately ensuring stable electricity supply across multiple regions.
This initiative aligns perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s energy transformation strategy and the objectives outlined in Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the energy mix and accelerate sustainable energy infrastructure development.
The successful commissioning of this 2.5GW facility marks a significant milestone in creating a modern power system in Saudi Arabia. It highlights the growing importance of battery energy storage in driving the Kingdom’s shift toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future. This project is expected to become a global benchmark for large-scale energy storage and reinforce Saudi Arabia’s position as a leader in advanced energy infrastructure.
