OpenAI has started to roll out a more advanced memory system for ChatGPT. This update aims to solve issues related to outdated information and user engagement, catering to millions of users over extended interactions.
The company explains that memory is essential for ChatGPT to remember user preferences, ongoing projects, and specific needs. This makes future conversations more relevant, as ChatGPT won’t have to start from scratch each time.
“In the past two years, memory has become a vital part of the ChatGPT experience, enabling better understanding of your context, which helps you achieve your goals more effectively,” remarked OpenAI.
By keeping important context, the memory feature allows ChatGPT to provide more personalized and consistent support throughout different sessions.
Rolling Out the Update
The new memory system is initially available to Plus and Pro users in the United States. OpenAI has announced plans to make it accessible to users in other countries, as well as those on Free and Go tiers, in the upcoming weeks.
The Journey of ChatGPT Memory
Memory was first introduced in April 2024 as “saved memories,” allowing users to ask the system to remember specific details for future reference.
Initially, this feature relied on explicit user commands, like “remember I’m traveling to Singapore in July.” While useful, it often acted like a basic note-taking tool, only recalling information directly stored and failing to grasp wider context. Over time, such memories could become less relevant or outdated.
In April 2025, OpenAI made significant improvements, enabling ChatGPT to use contextual information beyond the stored memories. Known informally as “dreaming,” this enhancement allowed the system to automatically update and refine memories by examining past conversations.
This new approach enabled ChatGPT to develop a deeper understanding of users, recognizing natural context without requiring direct instructions. It marked a major step forward in personalizing interactions.
In the past year, this combination of saved memories and contextual understanding has greatly improved ChatGPT’s ability to keep relevant context across discussions. However, OpenAI acknowledged that limitations remained, and a fully independent memory system was still lacking.
A New Era of Memory Technology
OpenAI has now introduced a more advanced and efficient memory architecture that builds on the “dreaming” concept. The updated system aims to enhance the relevance, freshness, and accuracy of stored information, all while scaling effectively for a rapidly growing global audience.
This latest upgrade is a game changer in how ChatGPT manages and synthesizes long-term user context, with the goal of providing more accurate, helpful, and consistent interactions over time.
