Day 1 Highlights: India Sets Strong Foundation Against Afghanistan
At the end of Day 1 of the first Test match, India stands at 368 for 3 in 85 overs against Afghanistan. Shubman Gill is not out at 103, while KL Rahul has contributed a solid 100.
When Afghanistan faced India in their inaugural Test back in 2018, it concluded in just two days. Fast forward to this match, and Afghanistan encountered a stark reminder of the challenges of Test cricket as Indian batsmen took control in Mullanpur.
Sai Sudharsan made a notable impact with 81 runs, supporting Gill as India put pressure on the Afghan bowlers. Afghanistan struggled with some decision reviews and inconsistent bowling, giving the Indian batters multiple opportunities to score.
Mohammed Saleem took two wickets, and Ziaur Rahman claimed one, but it was a long, tough day for the visiting team in the sweltering heat.
Rahul Survives Early Wobbles
India won the toss and chose to bat, a decision supported by Afghan captain Hasmatullah Shahidi. The Afghan bowlers started strong, trying to restrict Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul. They managed to trouble Rahul early, who struggled to find his rhythm.
A dropped catch from Afghanistan provided Rahul a crucial lifeline. He seemed to get away with a nick on an edge that was missed, as Ultraedge confirmed. Although Jaiswal was dismissed soon after, Rahul capitalized on his good fortune and needed help from Sudharsan to stabilize India’s innings.
After some shaky moments, both batsmen fought back, helping India reach 104 at lunch amidst a pitch that offered varying bounce and assistance to spinners.
The pitch flattened out in the later sessions, allowing Rahul to accelerate, while Sudharsan played aggressively. Afghanistan’s fielding struggles continued as chances went begging, giving the Indian batsmen the freedom to flourish.
Eventually, their partnership ended at 131, but the damage was already significant.
Gill Shines Brightly
It was clear that India has missed Shubman Gill since his recent neck injury. He made an impressive comeback, scoring swiftly after the break and hitting boundaries aplenty. As he built his innings, Rahul worked his way towards a century as well.
A single and a double got Rahul his hundred, but he was dismissed on the very next ball. Gill then shifted into high gear, hitting three consecutive boundaries to reach his fifty, and didn’t stop there.
Helping India surpass 350 runs, Gill completed his century with a single, marking his sixth as captain. Rishabh Pant joined in the fun with three sixes, putting the Afghan bowlers under immense pressure as they struggled to stop the flow of runs.
By the close of play, India had amassed 159 runs in the final session alone, with Pant also reaching his fifty.
Afghanistan Faces the Reality of Test Cricket
Before the match, Afghanistan’s coach mentioned their need for more Test matches to develop as a team. Having previously succeeded in other formats, they find Test cricket particularly challenging.
The Afghan side missed crucial catches and opportunities that could have changed the dynamics of the game, and their bowling plans appeared ineffective. A few no-balls and missed referral opportunities compounded their issues.
As the team reflects on this exhausting day, they will need to regroup and strategize for Day 2, or they risk a repeat of their swift defeat against India.
