Tragic Hotel Fire in New Delhi Leaves 21 Dead, Including Foreign Nationals
On Wednesday morning, a devastating fire broke out at a hotel in South Delhi, claiming the lives of at least 21 individuals, among them 18 foreign nationals. This incident marks one of the worst hotel fires in the city in recent years. Victims included people from Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Liberia.
Witnesses reported that some guests jumped from higher floors to escape the flames. Local residents quickly responded by bringing mattresses from a nearby shop to help cushion their fall. “People were spreading out mattresses, and I saw a woman with a small child jump onto one of them,” recalled Sher Khan, a nearby resident.
Footage from the scene showed individuals leaping from upper levels of the hotel as thick smoke poured out. The fire reportedly started on the ground and first floors, trapping those above. Local resident Wasim Raja shared, “We grabbed mattresses from the shop to lay on the street for anyone who jumped.”
The fire erupted shortly before 9 a.m. local time, leading to the deployment of eight fire trucks to combat the blaze. By midday, the fire was brought under control, according to a witness.
A police statement confirmed that through the collaborative efforts of emergency responders, over 40 people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. However, the authorities expressed deep sadness, confirming that 21 people lost their lives in this tragic event.
