Fourth Death in NYC’s Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak
New York City health officials announced that a fourth person has died amid an ongoing outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease. So far, 76 cases have been reported, and 60 individuals have been hospitalized, with 53 patients discharged and seven still receiving treatment.
The outbreak, linked to cooling towers in buildings on the Upper East Side, has raised alarm among city officials. The first death was reported on Friday, with two additional fatalities confirmed over the weekend.
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by the Legionella bacteria, which can lead to a serious form of pneumonia. Although most people exposed to the bacteria remain healthy, it can be fatal for some, especially if not treated quickly. Symptoms typically appear two to fourteen days after exposure and may include fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, and shortness of breath. Fortunately, antibiotics can effectively treat the disease if caught early.
City officials became aware of this outbreak on July 2 and quickly identified a connection to cooling towers in 31 buildings. After testing 180 cooling towers, authorities found live or dead bacteria in several locations. Importantly, just because dead bacteria were found in some towers does not mean that people in those buildings were exposed to the disease.
As a precaution, the city has ordered a thorough cleaning and disinfecting of the cooling towers in affected buildings, including the famous Guggenheim Museum.
The city has advised residents that wearing masks will not prevent infection, as the bacteria cannot be spread from person to person. Community outbreaks like this one generally arise from shared sources such as cooling towers, hot tubs, and spray fountains.
Public testing for the bacteria is currently ongoing. Health officials are especially urging anyone who has visited Manhattan’s Upper East Side since late June to be vigilant for signs of Legionnaires’ disease.
In August 2025, New York City experienced a severe outbreak in Harlem, where over 100 people fell ill and seven lost their lives due to the disease.
