India’s T20I vice-captain, Tilak Varma, has responded to criticism about his strike rate just ahead of the series against Zimbabwe. Since joining the team, Tilak’s strike rate has notably dropped over the years.
His strike rate was an impressive 187.73 in 2024, but this year it has fallen to 143.12, especially struggling against spin bowlers. On the recent tour to the UK, he recorded a strike rate of 152.94 in England and a lower 110.44 in Ireland. Speaking at a press conference before the Zimbabwe series, Tilak emphasized that he prioritizes the team’s needs above all.
“In this sport, you often find yourself batting in different situations, especially in varying conditions. I always aim to do what’s best for the team,” Tilak shared. He highlighted his ability to hit hard from the first ball but mentioned that his playing style depends on the team’s requirements at the moment.
“I can strike the first ball if necessary. But representing my country comes with a lot of responsibilities. The team’s situation dictates my approach. If I need to stick around till the end, our game plan can change accordingly,” he explained.
ADAPTING TO NEW RESPONSIBILITIES
Tilak was named vice-captain after Shreyas Iyer, as the BCCI restructured the T20I team following their World Cup victory. While the role may not seem significant, Tilak noted that this added responsibility impacts his gameplay.
“Having the title of vice-captain means the team trusts you. I want to embrace this responsibility and play according to the expectations set by the management,” he added.
India is set to compete against Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series starting July 23.
