India Faces New Challenge in Test Match Against Afghanistan
The upcoming one-off Test match between India and Afghanistan in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, signals an exciting change for the Indian cricket team. For the first time in over fifteen years, the team will take to the field at home without their legendary spin bowlers, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
Ashwin announced his retirement during the intense Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia earlier in the 2024-25 season. Jadeja, on the other hand, will miss this match due to an injury he picked up in the recent Indian Premier League.
The last time India played a home Test without either of these icons was back in November 2010 against New Zealand in Nagpur, where other spinners like Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha took charge. Now, the team turns to a new generation of players.
NEW LEADERS EMERGE
Filling the big shoes left by Ashwin and Jadeja will be a tough task, but Kuldeep Yadav is ready to step up as a senior member of the bowling lineup. If he plays in Saturday’s match, it will be the first time Kuldeep has taken the field in a Test without the familiar presence of Ashwin or Jadeja beside him.
Kuldeep acknowledged the loss of experienced teammates like Jadeja and the unavailable Axar Patel, but he remains confident in the younger players stepping up. “We will miss Jaddu bhai and Axar Patel, but the preparations have been solid,” he said. “We have promising youngsters like Harsh Dubey and Manav Suthar. Washington Sundar is also regularly playing Test cricket and is well integrated into the team.”
READY TO RISE
Although Dubey and Suthar are new to the international stage, Kuldeep believes their lack of Test experience won’t be a hindrance. He highlighted that India’s domestic structures and programs are designed to prepare emerging players for the challenges of five-day cricket.
“These youngsters have been part of India A tours over the last two years and regularly play in the Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy,” Kuldeep explained. “So while they may lack international experience, they are well-prepared in terms of match awareness and playing in red-ball cricket.”
With Afghanistan also boasting a solid lineup of spinners, the pitch in Mullanpur promises to be an exciting arena. For Kuldeep and his young teammates, this match is their chance to show that the future of Indian spin bowling is in good hands.
