Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, recently wrapped up a three-day trip to Canada, emphasizing the important role of the Indo-Canadian community in enhancing economic ties between India and Canada. The visit, which ended on May 28, focused on trade, investment, and ongoing talks for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two nations.
During his time in Canada, Goyal met with various groups, including academics, innovation centers, government officials, business councils, and members of the Indian diaspora in Toronto and Ottawa.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry noted that these meetings “helped maintain the positive momentum in the India-Canada economic relationship,” showcasing India as a top choice for investment and technology partnerships.
One highlight was Goyal’s visit to the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. There, he talked to faculty and students about India’s economic growth and how to boost bilateral trade and connections between the people of both countries.
He also explored the Ontario Centre of Innovation, engaging with Canada-India Tech Connect to discuss advancements in artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Goyal pointed out opportunities for collaboration in various fields, including AI, cleantech, agritech, and deep tech.
A significant part of Goyal’s visit included a meeting with Doug Ford, the Premier of Ontario. They discussed possible partnerships in areas like manufacturing, technology, energy, food processing, and critical minerals.
In addition, Goyal spoke with regional business leaders and industry representatives to emphasize the need for stronger commercial ties and greater investment, especially as CEPA talks continue.
He met with institutional investors like the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and CPP Investments to discuss investment possibilities in infrastructure, renewable energy, logistics, financial services, and the digital economy in India.
Encouraging further collaboration, Goyal urged businesses to explore opportunities in sectors such as clean energy, aerospace, and technology. He stated that India’s growing global presence is creating new opportunities for industries worldwide.
Additionally, Goyal interacted with members of the Canada-India Foundation, praising the significant role of the Indo-Canadian community in fostering closer ties between the two nations through business and personal connections.
Leading the largest-ever Indian business delegation to Canada, which included representatives from over 100 companies, Goyal’s visit aimed to reinforce economic relationships and expedite CEPA negotiations.
Currently, trade between India and Canada is approximately USD 8.5 billion, with both countries determined to increase it to USD 50 billion by 2030.
