Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and renowned composer A.R. Rahman are joining forces once more for a new film titled Masoom: The New Generation. This upcoming project takes inspiration from Kapur’s classic film Masoom, which was released in 1983. The collaboration marks another chapter in the partnership between Kapur and Rahman, who have previously worked together on notable projects like Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Bombay Dreams. In this film, Rahman will not only create the music but will also take on the role of co-producer.
The creators of Masoom: The New Generation aim to explore themes such as family, identity, love, and migration in a modern-day setting while staying true to the emotional essence of the original movie.
Kapur expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “For a long time, I’ve believed that the themes of Masoom deserve a fresh look through today’s lens. Families and relationships have changed significantly, and cinema needs to reflect that. Rahman has a unique talent for crafting music that resonates deeply with a story and its audience. His involvement as both composer and creative partner adds even more significance to this journey.”
Rahman shared his enthusiasm about working on the film in various roles, saying, “Collaborating with Shekhar has always been a rewarding experience, as he has mentored me creatively in many ways. His vision for this film inspired me to become more involved. There’s something timeless about Masoom, and reinterpreting its emotional depth for a new generation feels exciting and important.”
The film will feature a talented cast, including Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kaveri Kapur.
Originally released in 1983, the first Masoom is celebrated as one of the finest films in Hindi cinema, noted for its exploration of family dynamics and emotional struggles. With Masoom: The New Generation, the filmmakers aim to revisit these themes while addressing contemporary social issues.
Currently in pre-production, the film is set to begin shooting later this year, with plans for a worldwide theatrical release in 2026.
