Investigation into Hantavirus Case in Upstate New York
Authorities in Canandaigua, New York, are looking into a suspected case of hantavirus, as reported by the Ontario County Public Health Department. In a Facebook announcement on Thursday, officials clarified that this is a locally acquired case and stated, “There is NO connection to the cruise ship outbreak, and there is no risk to the general public.”
This investigation occurs against a backdrop of ongoing reports regarding a hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has reportedly affected several passengers and crew members, leading to three fatalities.
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that as of May 13, there have been 11 identified cases of hantavirus related to this cruise, including eight confirmed, two probable, and one inconclusive case, along with the three deaths.
Health officials insist that hantavirus infections are rare and that the risk to the general public remains low. They added that human-to-human transmission of the virus is extremely uncommon, only being suspected in specific strains like the Andes hantavirus associated with the cruise ship situation.
The Ontario County Public Health Department emphasized that hantavirus is typically spread through contact with mouse and rodent droppings. They advised residents to take precautions when cleaning areas where mice might be present, suggesting the use of gloves and masks, especially in attics, sheds, and garages.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also monitoring the situation, but they did not provide immediate comments on the recent case.
Additionally, the cruise ship outbreak has raised international concern, with Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands recently quarantining 12 staff members due to a breach of safety protocols related to handling samples from a hantavirus patient. Hospital officials assured that the risk of infection to staff remains low and the quarantine is purely a precautionary measure.
The outbreak aboard the MV Hondius began after the ship departed Argentina on April 1, and investigators believe it may have begun after travelers were exposed to rodents during birdwatching outings before boarding.
As health officials continue to investigate and provide guidance, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and informed about hantavirus and its risks.
