Breaking News: Virginia Tech Among Schools Affected by Cybersecurity Breach
Virginia Tech is reportedly one of many universities impacted by a significant cyber attack related to Canvas, the widely used Learning Management System. The hacking group known as “ShinyHunters” has taken responsibility for the breach and is threatening to release sensitive data unless institutions take action by May 12.
A message displayed on the Canvas platform reads:
“ShinyHunters has breached Instructure (again). Instead of contacting us, they chose to ignore our warnings and implemented some security updates.”
The message continues to urge affected schools to seek help from cybersecurity experts and to contact the hackers privately to discuss a settlement to avoid data leaks. Schools have until the end of the day on May 12, 2026, to negotiate with the group.
Data reportedly tied to nearly 9,000 educational institutions and affecting around 275 million students, teachers, and staff worldwide has been compromised. Instructure, the company behind Canvas, has acknowledged a cybersecurity incident but reassured users that passwords, Social Security numbers, and financial details remain safe.
Following the alarming message, the Canvas site displayed a notice stating, “Canvas is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance. Check back soon.”
As of now, Virginia Tech has not confirmed if any specific university data was breached. A statement regarding the situation is anticipated from the university soon.
This is an ongoing story, and further updates will be provided as more details emerge.
