Varun Chakravarthy Faces Challenges in IPL 2026
Varun Chakravarthy’s performance in the IPL 2026 season has raised some eyebrows, with inconsistent outings that may be linked to the mental and physical demands of the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Dwayne Bravo, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner, expressed that Varun may have needed a proper break following the World Cup before diving back into such a demanding tournament.
Several players from India’s T20 World Cup-winning team, including Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, have also struggled to find their rhythm this season. Ahead of KKR’s match against Delhi Capitals on May 8, Bravo reassured fans about Varun’s talent, saying that despite the ups and downs, his skills remain unquestionable.
“In sports, especially at this level, the focus is always on results, and it’s easy to get emotional,” Bravo remarked. He noted that Varun is a top-tier spinner who just finished a rigorous World Cup. “Taking a break at the right time is crucial, but his abilities are never in doubt. When a player is that talented, it’s usually just a matter of time before they rediscover their form.”
Bravo also pointed out the mental strain of the IPL, particularly after international competitions. “The team is very supportive of him, and a mental break is essential. The IPL is packed with pressure and top competitors,” he explained. “Every player experiences tough moments, and many others are facing challenges this season too.”
How Has Varun Performed in IPL 2026?
Varun’s IPL 2026 journey has felt like two different stories combined. He faced a rough start, going wicketless in his first three matches against teams like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, with some hefty figures of 0/48. As doubts began to creep in about whether batters had figured him out, Varun made a notable comeback.
He secured 10 wickets over the next four games, including a vital three-wicket performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad, helping to revive KKR’s chances. This inconsistency mirrors his T20 World Cup experience, where he finished as one of the top wicket-takers with 14 wickets. However, after a strong group stage, his impact dwindled in the later rounds.
Are India’s World Cup Stars Overworked?
Varun isn’t alone in facing a tough IPL season post-World Cup. Bumrah has only picked up three wickets in 10 matches for Mumbai Indians, while Arshdeep has faced inconsistencies despite taking 12 wickets in 11 games. Concerns about player fatigue have been widely discussed by former cricketers this season.
While some coaches have minimized these worries publicly, experts like Ravi Shastri have acknowledged the heavy workload and limited recovery time after the World Cup. The tight schedule offers little chance for players to recharge before entering another high-pressure tournament.
For athletes who shone during India’s World Cup victory just months ago, the signs of exhaustion are appearing in various ways throughout IPL 2026.
