Sunrisers Hyderabad: A Shift in Strategy on the Road to Playoffs
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have transformed their game this season, shifting from an all-out aggressive style to a more balanced approach. The team, which was a finalist in 2024, has shown that it can consistently score high totals without relying solely on brute force. After their victory over Punjab Kings on May 6, they climbed to the top of the table, signaling their newfound strength.
Following a disappointing finish outside the playoffs in 2025, SRH’s leadership took a step back to reassess their strategy. They now aim for durability while sticking to their core principles of batting aggressively.
Out of 11 matches this season, the team has only missed the 200-run mark three times. Led by captain Pat Cummins, SRH has had a powerful batting lineup, but it’s their consistency that has made them a formidable contender this year. They seem to be improving with each game since Cummins returned, and this momentum is promising as they head toward the playoffs.
Openers and Middle Order: A Harmonious Balance
One of the secrets behind SRH’s recent success has been the careful strategy of their middle order. This group focuses on assessing the pitch and setting realistic targets during the middle overs, allowing openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head to play aggressively. Meanwhile, players like Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan can adjust their play based on the match conditions.
This is a notable change from the last two seasons when SRH’s aggressive batting often came at a cost. In 2024, their relentless style surprised opponents, but by 2025, other teams had figured them out and exploited their weaknesses.
Cummins acknowledged this evolution after their latest win, highlighting the clearly defined roles within the batting lineup. “We play at our own pace without being overly conservative. It’s about maximizing our scoring opportunities,” he stated. He also mentioned that the team doesn’t fixate on a specific target, allowing for adjustments based on how the innings progresses.
Klaasen Shines Bright
A significant factor in SRH’s success has been Klaasen’s performance at No. 4. He has accumulated 494 runs in 11 matches and slightly tempered his aggressive style, with a strike rate of 157. Abhishek and Kishan have also made notable contributions, ranking second and fourth in the season’s run charts. Abhishek has amassed 475 runs at an impressive strike rate of 210, while Kishan has scored 409 runs at 186, demonstrating the team’s adjusted batting strategy.
SRH’s bowling attack has remained reliable, with several emerging players stepping up throughout the season. The team has appeared more balanced since moving away from including Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat in their lineup.
“We’ve played some really good cricket in Hyderabad,” Cummins said. “The conditions suit our style, especially when the pitch grips towards the end.”
With their latest triumph over Punjab, SRH stands at 14 points from 11 matches, closing in on a playoff spot. They have three more group stage games ahead against Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, and the reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
As they continue to refine their game, Sunrisers Hyderabad is ready to make a strong push for the playoffs this season.
